The Videopac+ G7400 is the console launched by Philips in Europe in late 1983, as the successor to the Videopac G7000 — the European version of the Magnavox Odyssey². It keeps the case with its built-in keyboard and the 8048 processor, but adds a pair of Thomson EF9340/EF9341 graphics chips that display a high-resolution background behind the sprites of the original machine.
The console is backwards compatible: every Videopac and Odyssey² cartridge runs on it, taking advantage of the new graphics where applicable. Only a handful of titles, labelled "Videopac+", were published to really exploit the high-resolution background plane. The G7400 was sold in France under the Jopac brand; the American version, the Odyssey³ Command Center, was never released.
Released in the middle of the video game crash and at the time of the first cheap home computers, the G7400 had a very short career, which makes it a rare and sought-after machine today.
The Videopac G7000 / Odyssey², the original machine, is a separate system in Recalbox, with its own roms folder and its own BIOS files: see Magnavox Odyssey² / Videopac.
It is the only emulator offered for this system, and it is available on every board, from the Raspberry Pi 3 and Pi Zero 2 up to the PC. Netplay and softpatching are not available with this core. RetroAchievements are supported on this system, as is CRT output.
A pad is mandatory and a keyboard is required: the console's built-in alphanumeric keyboard is mapped to the USB or Bluetooth keyboard plugged into your Recalbox, and many games use it to pick a mode or a variant.
Even though it is a console, the Videopac+ G7400 is filed by Recalbox among the computers, because of its built-in keyboard.
Both files are mandatory. They go into the o2em folder, shared with the Videopac G7000 / Odyssey².
| File name | Description | MD5 | Emulators |
|---|---|---|---|
o2em/g7400.bin |
Videopac+ G7400 BIOS (mandatory) | c500ff71236068e0dc0d0603d265ae76 | o2em |
o2em/jopac.bin |
BIOS of the French Jopac version (mandatory) | 279008e4a0db2dc5f1c048853b033828 | o2em |
Place your BIOS files like this:
/recalbox/share/bios/o2em/
├── g7400.bin
└── jopac.bin
The
o2rom.binandc52.binBIOS files, found in the same folder, do not concern this system but the Magnavox Odyssey² / Videopac. The BIOS checker sorts it out.
Put your games in:
/recalbox/share/roms/videopacplus/
Accepted extensions: .bin .zip .7z
The standard extension is .bin, the one used by No-Intro romsets. .zip and .7z archives are read directly: leave them compressed.
The roms folder really is
videopacplus, separate from theo2emfolder of the Videopac G7000. Cartridges common to both machines go with whichever console you want to play them on.
